Firefly Lane’s final season has officially begun with the release of the first nine episodes of the 16-episode season on Dec. 2. The new season picks up in the wake of the first season’s cliffhanger, which reveals Tully and Kate have a falling out in Firefly Lane season 2’s near future.
Throughout the season, new pieces of the puzzle are teased about what caused the rift between the inseparable best friends, and the puzzle appears to be potentially tragic. Something huge had to have happened to tear Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey apart.
The flash forward suggests Kate and Marah are on their way into a funeral when Tully approaches them. Whose funeral could they be attending, and does anyone die in the teased car accident? Here’s which characters, if any, die in Firefly Lane season 2 part 1.
Warning: Major spoilers ahead from Firefly Lane season 2 part 1!
As mentioned above, Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 flashes forward to a car accident in 2004. It’s revealed that Tully was the driver in the car, and the paramedics find her pretty banged up behind the wheel. However, she wasn’t the only person in the car.
The truth comes out toward the end of the season. When Tully takes Marah for a night, the teenager convinces her to go to the movies with her crush Ashley, in spite of Kate’s instruction not to let her go anywhere. Later that night, Marah calls Tully in tears because Ashley took them to a frat party, and Marah felt scared and in danger.
Tully, who had drank a glass of wine prior to the call, remembers her sexual assault as a teenager and rushes to pick up Marah from the party. After saving Marah, Tully drives them home. She drives through a green light when a car runs a red light and crashes into Tully’s car. Both of them are rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, but neither Tully or Marah die in the car accident.
The only person who dies in Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 is Kate’s father, Bud. He dies in his sleep after Thanksgiving dinner in 2004. Kate and Marah are attending his funeral when they run into Tully, who intends to attend to pay her respects.
Back in the 1970s, Tully and Kate mistakenly believe Cloud’s friend Leon overdosed in the Hart home. The best friends work together to clean and clear out the house with Cloud’s parole officer on the way, and that includes stashing Leon’s “dead” body under the stairs. Thankfully, Leon wasn’t dead and they weren’t potentially committing a crime.
