Where Is Mary Winkler Now?

Mary Carol Winkler (born December 10, 1973) is an American woman who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the 2006 killing of her husband, Matthew Winkler, the pulpit preacher of the Fourth Street Church of Christ in the small hamlet of Selmer, Tennessee.

Winkler attracted national attention due to public speculation about her motives and mental health, charges of abuse by her husband, her brief departure from the state, and the short length of her sentence (150 days in jail + 60 days in a mental health facility). Winkler was granted sole custody of her three daughters in August 2008.

According to authorities, Mary Winkler admitted to fatally shooting her husband on March 22, 2006, whose body was discovered in their home by church members after he skipped that evening’s service. A 12-gauge shotgun had been used to shoot him in the back.

Since 1996, the couple had been married. According to one neighbour, Matthew Winkler frequently threatened to shoot their dog after it strayed onto the Winklers’ lawn. Other people, as well as Mary Winkler’s relatives, claimed that Matthew Winkler was abusive to her. This, according to Winkler, was the cause of the shooting.
