We’ve been in such a drought for photos of Tom Hiddleston this year. Yes, there were a handful of events (Comic-Con, BAFTAs) and yes, he got pap’d on a date with Elizabeth Olsen. But Tommy can and does go MONTHS without being photographed. But now that he’s got some films to promote this fall, look who’s getting pap’d on the streets of London? Tom wasn’t just slumming it in sweatpants either! Tommy wore a fancy, too-tight suit. I get that he’s a tall, lanky bro, but he needs to rethink his tailoring preferences. Also: look closely at his shirt. It’s DENIM. Seriously.
As for the dude with him in these photos… I’m getting a hipster-friend/younger cousin kind of vibe from the guy (update: the guy is his publicist Luke, apparently, according to commenters). I kind of wonder if the suit looks weird because the suit is borrowed and Tom was in the midst of some kind of photoshoot, hopefully for some upcoming magazine cover? I want to believe that we’ll be seeing even more of Tom in the coming weeks. I want to believe he’ll be in Toronto to promote High Rise and I Saw the Light. Fingers crossed. Autumn of Hiddles, here we come!
Meanwhile, I asked some of you Dragonflies on Twitter if this interview was new. I was told that it was done at Comic-Con, but I didn’t cover it then and several sites are running these quotes like they’re new. Behold, Tom discussing how he weeps when he gets scared. He’s like a frightened little bunny, you just want to squeeze him.
The 34-year-old actor is best known for playing Loki in Marvel films such as Thor and The Avengers. While his alter-ego can be pretty menacing, in real life, Tom is unlikely to be the one doing the scaring.
“Some people, the hair on the back of their neck stands out. If I’m frightened, I involuntarily weep,” he told British magazine Empire. “If we were sitting around a campfire telling ghost stories, I’d be like: ‘No, keep going,’ but there would be tears streaming down my face.”
Loki may be a mythical character, but Tom definitely believes there are spiritual beings around us every day. In fact, the Brit is adamant he saw two old women at the end of his hotel bed one time. “I felt I couldn’t move. I said: ‘What are you doing here?’ The smaller one leant forward and said: ‘No, what are you doing here?’” he recalled. “I swear on my life.”
His interest in the supernatural is what drew him to his latest role in Crimson Peak. The horror romance also stars Jessica Chastain and is directed by Guillermo del Toro. Despite bursting into tears when he first read the script, Guillermo felt that Tom was the perfect person to play the role of Sir Thomas.
“[He’s] literally the embodiment of the dark, brooding hero,” he said, before admitting the term is possibly not the most appropriate for his character. “The one thing I wanted to do was show what happens when you finally marry Mr. Darcy. You get Mr. Darcy, and one morning you open the door and he’s doing something unspeakable…”
He’s saying his Crimson Peak character is like Mr. Darcy if Darcy was in a horror film? Hm. That’s interesting. As for Tommy seeing ghosts and Tommy weeping when he gets scared… bless him. I hope we keep hearing stories like this for months. And if the comments are about to devolve into people telling ghost stories, I have a few and they involve ghosts knocking on doors and playing with window blinds. Hand to God! I don’t know what I would do if two ghosts were at the foot of my bed.
