The 11-time Grand Slam champion, Rod Laver, met Mary Shelby Peterson for the first time at the Jack Kramer Tennis Club in 1966. Mary who was born in Illinois was a divorced mother with three kids. She also knew just a little about tennis. Eventually, their romance and dating grew into marriage in a few months’ time.

Standing outside the church, the players raised their tennis rackets to form an archway for the newlyweds to walk under as the couple left the wedding ceremony. A ceremony Laver always recalls.

The couple gave birth to a son, Rick Laver in 1969.

He was born just three weeks after his dad won the Grand Slam in 1969. Suddenly Mary Laver died in November 2012 at their home in Carlsbad.
