Some of Hollywood‘s finest work is inspired by real-life experiences and for Jason Segel, he relived a painful breakup for the sake of entertainment. Unfortunately, the heartwrenching reenactment received zero nods during the 2008 award show season, but Forgetting Sarah Marshall remains a fan-favorite raunchy comedy.
Jason Segel was dumped his girlfriend – butt naked
Forgetting Sarah Marshall left a lasting impact on fans, and not just because of its R-rated jokes. Five minutes in, viewers are treated – or scarred – by the sight of a naked then-27-year-old Jason Segel. The dedicated actor went full frontal when portraying Peter Bretter, who is abruptly dumped by their girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell).
In the opening scene, Bretter happily exits his shower wearing nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist. The shock causes him to drop the towel, revealing his crown jewels to Sarah and the audience. We’re talking full exposure of his junk in bright lighting.
What’s worse is that the laughable moment was taken from Segel’s own dating life.
Recalling the moment to Conan O’Brien, the actor, 43, said he stripped down to surprise his then-girlfriend, who suggested she visit his house. Jason eagerly agreed, thinking he was going to receive some action. Oh, how wrong he was.
He posed on the couch like a Calvin Klein model and his cheeky opening line, “I’ve got a surprise for you,” was met with her “We need to talk” response.
Instead of being devastated, Jason admitted he was distracted by how the situation was a comedy goldmine. “I’m thinking, ‘This is so funny, this is going to be amazing when I write it.’ It was absurd what was happening,” he said.
Segel even interrupted the break-up for 25 minutes to put on some clothes – his girlfriend’s favorite outfit – but the reenactment was cut from the final film.

Jason and Kayla, 32, made their red carpet debut at the Golden Globes for Segel’s best actor nomination for Apple TV+’s Shrinking.
Segel previously dated his Freaks and Geeks co-star Linda Cardellini, Michelle Williams, and photographer Alexis Mixter.
